The instinct is to read that as one company being expensive and the other being sensible, and it is usually neither. They are describing different amounts of underground work, and the stump grinding vs stump removal question has a straightforward answer for most gardens. What almost nobody explains is what the cheaper option quietly does to your options afterwards, which matters a great deal if you are not yet certain what that patch of ground is going to be.

University of Maryland Extension is direct: stump grinding does not remove all roots, though it takes out most of the wood at the trunk base and the largest attaching roots. What stays is the lateral root system, in the soil, breaking down slowly over years.
For a lawn, a bed, a mown area or ground that simply needs to stop being an obstacle, that is fine and it is what the method is for. Nothing has to happen to those roots. They are not doing anything.
The place it stops being fine is where something has to occupy that ground. And the useful way to think about that is not as a defect in grinding but as a deferral, which is the next section.
Grinding defers the decision rather than settling it
Here is the part that is worth knowing before you choose the cheaper quote, and it applies specifically to the reader who is not sure yet.
Grinding takes the stump out of your way and leaves the underground question open. If you never need that ground for anything, the question never comes up and grinding was simply the right answer. That is the majority of stumps.
If the plan for the spot changes later, though, you are paying for the same piece of ground twice. What an excavator then has to work through is a hollow filled with chip and settled soil, with the root mass still underneath it, and that is not meaningfully easier to dig than it was before it was ground. Not a disaster, and not a cheap thing to discover either.
So, the choice is not really grinding versus removal. It is whether you are deciding now or later, and how confident you are that later will look like today. Deciding now costs more today and nothing afterwards. Deferring costs less today and something later, but only if the plan changes.

A depth is meaningless without knowing what sits on top of it
This is where the two quotes usually differ without saying so, and the published figures are genuinely surprising.
Look at what institutions specify when they write it down. Louisiana's public specification calls for stumps and visible surface roots to be ground at least six inches below the lowest surrounding grade. DeKalb County's specification requires a minimum of four inches below grade. Meanwhile the University of Minnesota notes some grinders can go twenty-four inches or more, while cautioning that grinding may still not be deep enough for a given installation.
Two things follow. Those public numbers are contractual minimums for maintenance work rather than a target for a residential job; a normal professional result on a lawn here runs deeper than either of them, which is why we publish that figure separately. And the spread itself is the point: even among people who write specifications for a living, "below grade" ranges from four inches to two feet, because it is set by what the ground is being asked to do rather than by a standard.

Why one depth cannot be right for everything

The base specification belongs to whoever is building the next thing
If a patio, a footing, a pier, a shed pad or a trench is coming, this next step is worth more than either quote and it costs nothing to do.
Show the patio contractor or the designer the exact footprint, and have them specify the excavation depth, the base and the compaction they need. The University of Minnesota's guidance on stability is the reason: where a stable support base is required, loose fill can be unsuitable and over-excavation may be necessary before proper bedding goes in. If the stump or the major roots fall inside that required footprint, full removal and a properly rebuilt base is commonly the more conservative answer.
The sequence matters more than the answer. Get the specification first, then quote the stump against it. Ordering stump work before that number exists is exactly how somebody ends up paying for a grind and then an excavation on the same square metre.
And be careful of the assumption in the other direction. There is no universal rule that every stump root must come out before a patio. It depends on the footprint and the design, and the contractor building it is the one who decides.

Extraction has a scope worth defining before anybody quotes it
Where removal genuinely is the answer, the word covers a wide range and it is worth narrowing.
The useful scope is the roots and woody material inside the work area needed for the next construction step. Not every root on the property, which is a much larger and more expensive project that nobody actually needs.
So, a removal scope worth agreeing names four things: the footprint being cleared, the depth, what happens to the material coming out, and who is responsible for the fill, the compaction and the final grade. That last one is the item most often left unstated, and it is a real cost.
The dig notice applies to both, and it runs in advance
One practical constraint that catches people out on either method.
Anything mechanised going into the ground in Connecticut needs a Call Before You Dig notice. The state's programme requires excavators to call so participating utilities can mark their facilities, and it runs ahead of the work rather than on the morning.
That is why stump work frequently cannot happen on the same visit as the tree removal, and it applies to grinding as much as to extraction. Your own buried lines are not part of the markout, so irrigation, lighting, a well line or a supply to a shed is yours to mark.

What the two options cost, and what actually moves it
For planning, stump work runs from a couple of hundred dollars for a straightforward grind up into the high five thousands where extraction becomes a genuine excavation project, and Angi's cost research identifies method, size, location, species, permits, cleanup and hauling among the factors behind that.
What is not true is that grinding is always the cheaper answer. It is usually less extensive work, and access, requested depth, disposal and the finished surface you want can close the gap considerably. A deep grind with the grindings hauled away and the hollow filled with imported soil is a different price from a shallow one with the chip left where it falls.
The rest of what moves it is the ordinary list: the diameter at the flare, what condition the ground and the stump are in, whether a machine can reach it, how many there are, and what the surface has to look like at the end.
