
Somebody has told you that stump grinding leaves the roots in the ground, and it landed badly. It sounds like a half-finished job, and now you are picturing either a lawn with a hidden skeleton under it or a machine turning the whole back garden into a building site to dig one stump out properly. Neither of those is usually what happens. Tree root removal is not one job with one right answer; it is a question about footprint, and the honest version is that the correct depth is decided entirely by what is going on top of that ground afterwards. Before anybody quotes anything, answer one question about the ground where the stump is: what is going there?
If the answer is grass, the roots below a few inches are not in anybody's way. They are a couple of inches down, they break down over the years, and grass only needs the top few inches to be decent soil. Chasing lateral roots across a lawn in that situation is work you paid for and will never see.
If the answer is a patio base, a footing, a pier, a trench or a pool, then the roots inside that footprint are an obstruction and they have to come out. But notice what changes: the yard gets opened up because it was being opened up anyway. You are not sacrificing the lawn to remove roots, you are removing roots inside an excavation that was already happening.

Grinding takes the surface back, and that is usually enough
A grinder cuts the stump down below grade, and how far below depends on the job. Illinois Extension notes that grinders can work anywhere from flush with grade to more than a foot down, with the deeper work leaving a bigger hole to fill.
What is left afterwards is the root ball and the lateral roots, sitting where they always were, under whatever soil goes back on top. For a lawn that is fine. For a garden bed you want a bit more depth so there is room for roots above the remains. For anything that gets dug, it is not fine, which is the whole point of asking the footprint question first.
The disruption is localised. A machine reaches the stump, cuts it down, and the mess is a mound of chips around a hole rather than a scar across the garden. That is why stump grinding and removal is the lower-impact route when the goal is to get the surface usable again.
The grindings are what ruin a lawn, not the roots
This is the part that decides how the patch looks in September, and almost nobody is told about it.
The obvious thing to do with the hole is push the chips back in. Do not, at least not where you want grass. Decomposing wood competes for nitrogen while it breaks down, so a seedbed made of wood chips is a seedbed that starves the grass you just sowed. The lawn comes in thin, yellow and patchy and it looks like bad seed rather than bad backfill.

What works instead is straightforward. Take the excess grindings away, bring in clean soil, bring the level up slightly proud because it will settle, grade it into the surrounding lawn, then seed or turf it. That is a lawn renovation step rather than a stump step, and it is worth agreeing who is doing it before the grinder shows up.

Some settling and the odd mushroom is normal
Two things happen afterwards that people mistake for a fault.
The ground over old root paths can settle for a season or two as the wood underneath breaks down, so a patch that was level in May can be slightly dished the following spring. Topping it up once is usually the end of it.

Two checks before a machine digs
Call Before You Dig, with the real clock on it.
