It is the morning after a windy night and something about the tree looks different, or you have just properly noticed it for the first time and cannot tell whether it always looked like that. You are not doing research. You are checking, because there is more wind forecast and you want to know whether to move the car and keep everyone off that side of the garden today. The useful thing to understand is that a tree does not fall because it has a defect. It falls when a defect, something in reach to be hit, and a load all line up on the same night, and that is a question you can work through from your own lawn in twenty minutes.
Before anything else: if the tree is over people, a road or a power line right now, keep everybody and every vehicle well away, do not approach it, treat any wire as live, and call 911 if there is an immediate danger to life.

A load. Wind in the forecast, ground still saturated after a wet week, wet snow or ice sitting in the canopy. This is the one people leave out, and it is why trees that stood through ten winters come over in the eleventh with nothing visibly different about them.

What should you look at first?

Is the tree moving at the base?
Walk a full circle around the trunk and look at the ground rather than the tree. You are looking for soil that has cracked open, a mound pushed up on one side, roots that have lifted clear, or a gap where the trunk meets the soil. Then the lean itself, and this is where fresh versus old matters most. A tree that has grown with a curve has looked that way for decades. A straight lean that starts at ground level and appeared after wind, snow or a wet spell is a different thing, because it says the tree moved rather than grew.
If you find heaved soil at the base of something that leans toward the house, stop the walk-around there. Keep people and cars out of the fall zone and get it dealt with. That is not a wait-for-the-weekend situation.
Is there a crack or a split in the trunk?
Look at the trunk in good light, all the way round. A crack can run through both bark and wood, and UConn's guidance is to act immediately when one is found on inspection.
Fresh reads differently from old. New splits show bright, clean wood and sharp edges; an old wound is grey, weathered, often with rolled bark around it. Two stems visibly parting where they join is the same warning at a different place on the tree.
While you are at the trunk, look at the forks. UConn flags a tight fork with bark pressed between the stems as a weaker attachment that can push itself apart over time. It is not urgent on its own, but it belongs on the list.

Is anything hanging overhead?
Step back and look up through the canopy, ideally from more than one side. A broken branch still attached, or one that has come free and lodged in the branches below, is what UConn calls extremely dangerous, and it is the one on this list that most often hurts somebody.
Do not stand under it to get a better look. Do not pull on it, poke it with a pole, or try to bring it down. It is already a falling object and it is waiting for a gust. That is emergency work, and it is the sort of thing dispatch exists for.

Note it, photograph it, and be honest that this is where your reading stops. A hollow trunk is not automatically dangerous and a solid-looking one is not automatically safe.
