Tree Services

# Tree Services

Five services that overlap more than their names suggest. This is how to tell which one your property actually needs, and what happens when a job turns out to need two or three of them.

Most people arrive here knowing what they can see and not what it is called. A tree down across the drive. A stump somebody left behind. A back corner that has closed in over ten years. A limb hanging where the car goes.

You do not have to sort that into the right category before you call. The quickest way through is one question: is the tree still standing? If it is, you are looking at a removal, or at an emergency if it is threatening something now. If it is already down, or it was cut years ago, you are looking at stump work or at clearing.

What follows is the longer version, for anyone who wants to understand what they are buying before the truck turns up.

01

## The five, and what each one actually is

Named by what they do rather than by trade convention.

- [Tree removal](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/tree-removal/): A specific standing tree comes down under control, in pieces if it has to, and the wood and brush go where you agreed. This is the planned version: you booked it, nothing is on fire.
- [Emergency tree services](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/emergency-tree-services/): The same physical work, dispatched because something is threatening a building, a car, a wire or your way out right now. Answered around the clock, though whether a saw runs at 3am depends on wind, light and whether a utility has to go first.
- [Emergency storm response](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/emergency-storm-response/): The event-wide version. Several trees down, access blocked, debris across the whole property, usually after a named storm and often with an insurance claim attached. Connecticut DEEP treats the immediate hazards and the longer cleanup as two different problems, and so do we.
- [Stump grinding and removal](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/stump-grinding-removal/): Ground-level work after a trunk is already gone. Grinding takes the stump below grade; full removal means digging more out, and which one you are getting belongs in the quote in writing.
- [Forest mulching](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/forest-mulching/): A machine processes brush, saplings and small stems where they stand and leaves the material as a mulch layer. It is a way of clearing ground, not a way of taking down a mature tree.

## The two people mix up most often

[Emergency tree service](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/emergency-tree-services/) and [storm response](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/emergency-storm-response/) start with the same phone call, and plenty of companies list them as one thing. The honest test is not whether it rained. It is whether something is threatening a person or a building right now.

A tree or limb touching a structure, blocking the only way in or out, or anywhere near a line, is an emergency and gets triaged as one. A pile the storm made that can safely sit until Thursday is cleanup, and pretending otherwise costs you the after-hours premium for no benefit.

The other regular mix-up is [forest mulching](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/forest-mulching/) against removal. A mulching machine is the wrong tool for a big tree, and asking it to solve an aerial problem leaves the hazard exactly where it was. If a particular mature tree has to come down carefully, that is a removal, and it happens before any ground machine goes near the area.

03

## When a job needs more than one

The order is not arbitrary. Each step has to be finished before the next one is safe or even possible.

Step 01

### Make it safe first

If there is a live line or something is resting on a building, nothing proceeds as an ordinary booked job. Downed wires belong to the utility and to emergency responders, and Connecticut DEEP is explicit that the immediate response is not a homeowner's or a contractor's to improvise.

Step 02

### Settle access, utilities and where the material goes

That is a legal interval, not a scheduling preference, and forgetting to make the call does not turn the job into an emergency.

Before any mechanized ground work, Connecticut requires a Call Before You Dig notice: at least two full working days, not counting weekends or holidays

Step 03

### Take the large trees down before touching the ground

Removal comes before grinding or mulching. It creates safe machine access, and it stops a grinder or a mulcher being asked to solve a problem that is fifty feet in the air.

Step 04

### Then process what is left, the way you asked for it

[Stump grinding](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/stump-grinding-removal/) for discrete stumps, mulching for an accessible brushy area. Chips, logs, grindings and mulch do not automatically share a destination, and if you are keeping hardwood as firewood, Connecticut requires origin and destination documentation to move it within the state.

04

## What combining them does to the price

Combining these does save money, and it is worth knowing exactly where the saving comes from, because it is not a discount on the work. It is a mobilization saving: one setup, one trip, one crew day instead of two.

The public record shows how the work gets priced when a real buyer contracts for it. West Haven's 2024 municipal contract prices a crew by the hour, the stump machine and its crew at that same hourly rate, and an emergency call-out at a premium on top. Those are line items rather than a bundle, which is the shape to expect on your own quote.

What genuinely moves a multi-service number is whether the machines can reach the work, how much material leaves the property, whether the road needs traffic control, and whether the utility locate window forces a second visit. A removal and a grind can often be one mobilization when the grinder can reach the stump and the 811 window has passed. When it has not, the stump is a separate day, and that is the law rather than an upsell.

05

## What we do not do

None of these five is pruning, trimming, planting or tree health work. Connecticut licenses that separately as arboriculture, which covers improving or protecting a tree's condition, and we do not hold that licence.

So, if what your tree needs is a diagnosis, a treatment, or careful pruning to save it, you want a licensed arborist and we will say so rather than sell you a removal. That happens more often after an ice storm than people expect: DEEP points to monitored maples and ash still alive five years after losing more than 75% of their canopy.
