# Tree Removal in Ansonia, CT

Hennessey Tree & Landscape removes dead, damaged and hazardous trees across Ansonia, from the valley floor up to the east hillside. Two things are different here: the utility is United Illuminating, not Eversource, and a street tree needs a Board of Aldermen permit.

[Call Today](tel:+12037512451)

Hennessey Tree & Landscape takes down dead, damaged and hazardous trees anywhere in Ansonia, from the flood wall and the Route 8 corridor up through Wakelee Avenue to the hillside streets on the east boundary. Most residential removals take a few hours to a full day on site, and we quote from the ground before anything is booked. We run 24/7 for emergencies.

Two Ansonia specifics are worth knowing before you call anyone. The electric utility here is United Illuminating, not Eversource, and UI is who you call for a tree touching a power line, on 800-722-5584. Getting that wrong wastes the afternoon that matters.

The second is the street tree rule. Under the city code, nobody may cut down a tree standing on an Ansonia street or highway without a permit from the Board of Aldermen. On a dense city grid the boundary between your tree and a street tree is often not where people assume, so it gets checked before anything is booked.

We remove trees and we do land work. We do not diagnose tree health or do arborist work, so if what you need is somebody to tell you whether a tree is diseased rather than whether it is coming down, that is a licensed arborist's job and we will say so.

## Why Ansonia properties face this

Ansonia is a narrow Naugatuck River valley city, and the numbers make the shape clear: an 18 foot low where the [Naugatuck](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/naugatuck-ct/) leaves the south boundary, a 450 foot high on the east boundary, and an average valley floor about a mile wide. A property on the valley floor and one on the hillside above it are different jobs with the same tree standing on them, so it is worth not treating the city as flat.

It is also the densest place we work. Ansonia runs 2.1 housing units per acre against 1.8 in [Derby](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/derby-ct/), 0.8 in [Seymour](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/seymour-ct/) and 0.3 in [Woodbridge](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/woodbridge-ct/), which the city's own plan attributes to a small land area and a high proportion of multifamily housing. Close set housing means the work zone survey around structures, service drops, fences and driveways is the job rather than a formality.

The housing is old. The 2018 city plan reports a 2015 median construction year of 1951, with about 90 percent of structures built before 1970 and 42 percent before 1939. Trees planted around houses of that age have had decades to grow into the space, and the space here was never generous.

The city plan identifies slopes above 25 percent, watercourses and water bodies, floodplain and public water supply watershed areas as its sensitive land, with poorly drained soils as its wetland resource category. Water has form here: the August 1955 tropical storm and Hurricane Diane event produced major Naugatuck Valley flooding that knocked down bridges, and the flood wall system that followed was built to reduce the damage next time.

## What we do in Ansonia

Five services cover most of what Ansonia properties call about.

- [Tree removal](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/tree-removal/): Whole trees down and cleared on tight city lots and hillside streets. On this density the drop zone and the exclusion zone are usually the constraint, not the saw.

### Emergency and storm response

Valley flooding and wind both have history here. Trees on roofs, across the connector streets and into lines, cleared once United Illuminating has made the scene safe.

- [Stump grinding and removal](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/stump-grinding-removal/): Quoted separately. On the valley floor the ground is usually workable; up the hillside it is less predictable, so we quote a range and tell you which you are on.
- [Land clearing](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/land-clearing/): Opening overgrown ground, with the wetlands and floodplain question settled first. The city names watercourses, floodplain and water supply watershed among its sensitive land.
- [Property expansion and brush removal](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/services/property-expansion-brush-removal/): Pushing a wood line or a bank back off a house, a drive or a boundary, which on lots this size buys back usable space rather than just tidying an edge.

## Where we work in and around Ansonia

We cover the whole city. Route 8 and Route 115 run north to south and Route 243 runs east to west, with Route 334, Wakelee Avenue, Franklin Street, Maple Street, Olson Drive, Pershing Drive, Beaver Street, Hill Street, Jewett Street and Marshall Lane named among the key local roads.

One access fact matters more here than almost anywhere: the Bridge Street Bridge and the Maple Street Bridge are the only two river crossings in the city. On a job that needs a truck from the other side, that is worth knowing at the quote rather than on the day, and it is a real reason to confirm staging, traffic control, bridge and load restrictions and utility clearance with the responsible authority rather than reading access off a map.

Ansonia borders [Seymour](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/seymour-ct/) to the north, [Woodbridge](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/woodbridge-ct/) to the east, and [Derby](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/derby-ct/) to the south and west. We work across that area from our base in [Oxford](https://hennesseytreeandlandscapect.com/oxford-ct/), and all three of those are towns we cover in full.

Species here follow the county rather than a city inventory, and no Ansonia specific inventory of what is planted around houses exists. The documented New Haven County native hardwood mix is red and white oak, red maple, hickories, birches, chestnut oak on the rocky ridges, black and scarlet oak, sycamore in the river bottoms, tulip tree on moist sites, black cherry, beech, elm, hemlock and ash. Statewide, DEEP's current threat list runs from emerald ash borer and hemlock woolly adelgid to beech leaf disease and spotted lanternfly.

## What happens when you call

Four steps. In Ansonia the first one usually decides the method, because access is the constraint more often than the tree is.

Step 01

### We look at it from the ground

We walk the tree, the drop zone and the route a truck can actually take, and we establish whether it is a street tree needing a Board of Aldermen permit or genuinely yours.

Usually within a few days

Step 02

### You get it in writing

What comes down, who takes the brush and the logs, whether the stump is included and as what range, and whether the utility or the city has to be involved first. There is no Hennessey price list, because no two Ansonia properties are the same job.

Step 03

### We set up and protect

Ground mats where equipment crosses turf, the exclusion zone marked, and on a tight street the staging worked out so neighbors can still get past.

15 to 90 minutes

Step 04

### Down, chipped and cleared

Brush through the chipper as the cutting proceeds, logs hauled or stacked where you asked, then a rake and blow down and a walk round with you.

A few hours to a full day for most residential removals

## Permits, the utility and who owns the tree

For a tree wholly on private property, [Ansonia publishes no permit requirement](https://library.municode.com/CT/ansonia/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=PTIIITHCO_CH17OFIS_S17-44RE). The codified city rule that does exist applies to a tree standing upon any street or highway: under the city code, nobody may cut one down without a permit from the Board of Aldermen. State law separately governs public trees, so on a city grid this is the first thing to establish rather than the last.

Near water, the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission is Ansonia's sole municipal licensing authority for regulated activities affecting wetlands and watercourses under the state statute. Three of its seven members come from the Conservation Commission. Given how much of the city's sensitive land is watercourse, floodplain and water supply watershed, that review catches more work here than the tree alone would suggest.

On a wire, call United Illuminating on 800-722-5584, not the city and not us. UI provides electric service to Ansonia and directs customers there for a tree and power line problem. For an immediate danger, 911 first. This is the single most common thing people get wrong about Ansonia, because most of the towns around it are Eversource.

We remove trees and clear land. Diagnosis, treatment and anything arborist is a licensed arborist's work, and we will point you at one rather than guess.

## Questions Ansonia homeowners ask

How much does tree removal cost in Ansonia?

Across Connecticut the published price models span a couple of hundred dollars at the small end and reach into the high five thousands at the very large end, and most ordinary residential removals are a long way from that top figure. That is market data rather than a quote. Here the number moves on access and clearance on a tight lot far more than on height, and on whether a permit or the utility has to come first.

How fast can you get here after a storm?

We run 24/7 emergency response, so a tree on a house or into a line is triaged straight away rather than queued. Ordinary removals are quoted within a few days and scheduled by season; Connecticut operators publish about two weeks from approval between mid-April and October, against roughly one week in winter.

Will my insurance cover it?

Generally only if the tree hit something. The Connecticut Insurance Department says a policy usually covers damage to the house and removal of the tree from it after a covered storm, with removal from the premises generally covered up to $500 where it damaged a covered structure or blocked the driveway. A tree down in the yard that hit nothing generally is not covered.

Who do I call about a tree on the wires in Ansonia?

United Illuminating on 800-722-5584, and 911 first if a line is down. Ansonia is UI territory, not Eversource, which catches people out because most neighboring towns are Eversource. The utility controls the electrical hazard whoever owns the tree.

The tree is between the pavement and my fence. Is it mine?

Worth establishing before anyone quotes it. The city code requires a Board of Aldermen permit to cut down a tree standing on a street or highway, and on lots this close set the line is often not where people assume. We check it as part of looking at the job.

Can you get a truck to my street?

Usually, but it is the question we answer on site. The city has only two river crossings, at Bridge Street and Maple Street, and several of the connectors are narrow, so staging, traffic control and any bridge or load restriction get confirmed rather than assumed from a map.
